Ocean Vuong gives, in this first collection of his, the immediate feeling of wanting to melt, with stark images and a rawness that possess a sort of particularity, something of a trademark that can also be repetitive when it’s played too often, which was what I felt on reading this book. Some images can be fantastic though:

This horse with its human

Face. This belly full of blades…

The collection is full of longing for a father that was hardly there, locked up in a prison. In Telemachus, he says:

Do you know who I am, Ba?

But in this longing for the absent father, it is the mother’s sturdy presence, her kindness and sacrifice beyond measure that emerges in stark beauty.

Entirely, the collection is full of longing.
